Isle of Scilly Link - Harbours Project Team

Birse Coastal

Andrew Mason

Position:  Contracts Manager, Birse Coastal

My role:  My role on this scheme is to manage the project teams at both Penzance and St Mary’s and ensure the project is executed to the highest standards of health & safety, on time, to budget and to the correct quality. I will use my many years of experience to ensure the project is a success for all and a flagship project for our customer.

About me:  I have worked for Birse for nearly 20 years and have a vast experience in both coastal and marine works. I believe it is essential that all stakeholders and local members of the public are kept informed throughout the project and this will be one of our key drivers.

Ged Wright

Position: Project Manager, Birse Coastal

My role: I'm responsible for managing the day to day running of the scheme. I'll be doing my utmost to ensure that our operations cause minimal disruption to residents, visitors and businesses.

About me: I've been with Birse for 3 years and I've 23 years experience in the Civil Engineering industry. I've worked in various parts of the UK (including work on islands) and this project is one of the most interesting I've been involved with.

Caroline Mottram

Position: Business Development Director for Birse Coastal and Public Relations Manager for this project.

My role: My role on this scheme is to manage all aspects of customer care, public liaison, media, public relations, project image and communications. I'll be making sure this website is kept up-to-date, so visit regularly for the latest news !  The team is going to be working hard to ensure we don't disrupt you or your businesses, so if you want any information or if you've got any suggestions for us, then please get in touch with me.

About me: I've been working with Birse since 1995, and involved in the PR side of the business since 1998.  I qualified in management and marketing through a part-time MBA course in my home town of Staffordshire.  I love the south west region and have family nearby, so you'll find me out and about on site a lot - especially in summer !

When I’m not working, I’m a bit of an adrenalin-junkie, and like to unwind by either horse riding, motor sports (watching and participating) or sky diving.

Paul Weaver

Position: Commercial Director - Birse Coastal

My role:  I will be guiding and advising the team on all commercial matters through the early contractor involvement and construction periods. I will be working hard with the team to ensure our solutions at Penzance and St Mary's are affordable and within the project budget.

About me: I have been working on major civil engineering projects since leaving school and this project has to be amongst the most interesting and challenging I have been involved with.

Brian Farrington

Position: Technical Business Manager

My role: I am responsible for delivering engineering excellence in Birse Coastal across all our projects. A chartered civil engineer with over 20 years experience of delivering successful civil engineering projects, of which the last 7 years relate to marine related projects in a marine environment.  On this scheme, I will be involved in scheme design development promoting buildable innovative solutions through the value engineering and design process. As we move into construction phase, I will provide support to site teams and assist with all technical aspects of the scheme. In addition, I am responsible for training and development within Birse Coastal and looking after the wellbeing of all of our engineering team.

About me: Home base is near Blackburn in Lancashire, although I'm a West Yorkshire lad by origin. I enjoy fly fishing and am slowly learning how to play golf, and I can report golf is harder than it looks!

Andrew Hoyle

Position: Project Quantity Surveyor, Birse Coastal

My role: There is a great deal of work to do on this project before construction even begins and it is during this period that important design decisions will be made. Part of my role is to advise on the cost implications of those decisions as the design of the scheme develops so that we end up with a design that meets everyone's expectations while being buildable within the budget allowances. Birse Coastal has a track record of delivering quality projects on time and within budget - and we intend to ensure that this scheme is no exception.

About me: I'm a chartered surveyor with a degree from Loughborough in quantity surveying. I joined Birse Coastal in 2005 and my experienced prior to this was gained on major civil engineering projects including roads, airports, etc. One of the things I really enjoy about working for Birse Coastal is that we tend to work in some very attractive locations although none more so than this scheme. I have enjoyed many a holiday in Cornwall both as a child and more recently with my family in Penzance and the surrounding areas. My first impressions of St. Mary's are that it is truly a special part of the country and we all feel quite privileged to be working there.

Duncan Aspin

Position:  Health, Safety Environmental and Quality Manager (HSEQ), Birse Coastal

My role:  The Isles of Scilly Link Harbour Works present a number of challenges, particularly in relation to health and safety and the environment. My role is to ensure that these challenges are met head on, protecting the public, the workforce and the environment throughout the development.

About me:  I have been working in construction for over 20 years, eight of those in health and safety. I joined Birse in 1991 as a site engineer and progressed through the ranks to my current role. I have a real passion for construction, having been brought up in a small family construction company before entering the world of Civil Engineering.
