In 2002 the Council of the Isles of Scilly commissioned report entitled “Moving On – A Transport Strategy for the Isles of Scilly” was published. This report recommended that a Route Partnership was formed to address transport issues to the Isles of Scilly.
Transport to the Isles of Scilly is possible currently via three main modes of travel; sea, helicopter and fixed wing. The sea vessels are approaching the end of their economic lives and whilst passengers and some freight can be conveyed by air, costs can be significantly higher, especially for freight. Extensive study work revealed that the loss of a sea passenger service would have wide ranging impacts on employment, commerce and tourism both in the Isles of Scilly and on the mainland. The Route Partnership are working together to provide a sea service that will serve the community and economic interests of the area.
Accordingly a Route Partnership was formed in 2003 which included the transport providers (British International Helicopters and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company) until 2008. Since that time the Route Partnership has comprised the Council of the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall Council and the Duchy of Cornwall. It is chaired by the Council of the Isles of Scilly.
In 2009 a Political Sub-Group twas created to join together the local ward members from Penzance with members from the Isles of Scilly. This group has recently been extended to include members from Falmouth. The group is chaired by the Cornwall Council portfolio holder for Transport.
