St.Mary’s Harbour forms part of the Duchy of Cornwall, Isles of Scilly estate. As the Harbour Authority, the Duchy of Cornwall has the responsibility to manage the operation of the Quay and those that use it. It is as a result of this responsibility that the Duchy of Cornwall has become an integral member of the Route Partnership.
St.Mary’s Quay as we see it today was mostly constructed in the era of the horse and cart and sailing ships. Although it has been modified and extended over the years, it now struggles to accommodate the volume of freight and passengers as well as the large modern ships and motor vehicles that use it. The formation of the Route Partnership with its objective to protect the sea link between the Isles of Scilly and the mainland was a unique opportunity to extend the quay and modernise the facilities. The process of securing funding has been a true model of co-operation and determination by the partners. The Duchy of Cornwall remains fully committed to the aims of the Route Partnership to provide a safe, modern and efficient sea route to the Isles of Scilly which will serve the islands for many years to come.
